PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE
“ Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles
develop your strengths. When you go through hardships
and decide not to surrender, that is strength .”
H
There have also been quite a few changes
in the education sector, chief of which is
the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC),
now becoming a government department
and being renamed The Department of
Education and Knowledge (ADEK). The
introduction of the Emirati School Model
is another notable development. This has
given rise to a change in the public school
curriculum across the country.
If you work in the government sector, I
hope these changes have not been too
difficult for you. Education continues to
be a top government priority regionally
and there is no let up in the investments
being made in this very vital sector. The
United Arab Emirates is focussed on
fulfilling its Vision 2021 which includes
the goal of being rated among the top 15
countries in The Trends in International
Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
and The Programme for International
Student Assessment (PISA). This is an
ambitious goal but steps are being taken
to ensure that the country fulfils this goal.

ow has your school year been
going? At this point in the
school year many of us are
so tired, that we are literally
counting down to the winter
break. The first term of any school year
can be a challenging one. If you are new
to the region this year, we hope, by now
you have settled in and are happy with
your decision to move to this part of the
world. This is the time of the year, when
educators begin to think about their next
move. They decide whether to stay in their
school, the country and even the region,
for the upcoming school year. Schools
begin to ask for an indication of whether
or not you wish to continue in your role.
With this in mind we have provided you
with informative articles to help you in
making those crucial decisions.

Thank you for the wonderful feedback
on our September - October 2017 issue.
It really is our pleasure to serve the
educators of this region. Many of you
have tweeted at us, sent us messages
on Facebook and emails. It is our hope
that this current issue will exceed your
expectations. We have gone over to
Abu Dhabi and taken a closer look at the
Raha International School. They share
with us what they are doing to help their
students become innovators and critical
thinkers. With the weather becoming
more favourable for outdoor learning we
explore some of the great benefits to be
had by both students and teachers when
learning is taken outdoors.
In our “After the Bell” section of the
magazine we explore the truth behind
“Teacher Burnout” and what we can do
to prevent it. Ever wanted to explore Bali.
Yes? Well we have you covered in our
travel feature on Bali.
The Middle East Maths Teachers
Conference is coming up on February
