EMPOWER. “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” - Maya Angelou HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declared 2016 as the Year of Reading. The significance of this theme is one that educators not only understand, but also welcome wholeheartedly, as it speaks to the fundamentals of literacy, which is required across the various subject areas. It also helps to embed a culture of reading for pleasure in society. It is hoped that reading will no longer be seen as a chore, but as a way to enlighten and broaden the mind and feed the soul. For any reading programme initiated by the government or any other party to be successful, it needs the full support of teachers, parents and students. Instilling a love for reading in students is easier said than done. We have consulted with some of the best in the field, to bring you an issue filled with vital tips and strategies to transform your literacy and reading lessons. Parents, the job of teaching children to read and develop their love for reading does not stop at school. Find out how you can create a wonderful environment for reading in your own home. For our Featured School, we head to Sharjah’s beautiful Corniche for a visit to the Victoria International School of Sharjah. They also showcase their wonderful lower school reading initiatives. We also want to highlight the work 4 | Mar - Apr 2016 | | that schools are doing, and some of the contributions that educators are making to further promote and support this reading agenda.
