CONNECT. DEVELOP. EMPOWER.
“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make
reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”
- Maya Angelou
HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan,
President of the UAE, declared 2016 as
the Year of Reading. The significance of
this theme is one that educators not
only understand, but also welcome
wholeheartedly, as it speaks to the
fundamentals of literacy, which is
required across the various subject
areas. It also helps to embed a culture
of reading for pleasure in society. It
is hoped that reading will no longer
be seen as a chore, but as a way to
enlighten and broaden the mind and
feed the soul.
For any reading programme initiated by
the government or any other party to
be successful, it needs the full support of
teachers, parents and students. Instilling
a love for reading in students is easier
said than done. We have consulted
with some of the best in the field, to
bring you an issue filled with vital tips
and strategies to transform your literacy
and reading lessons. Parents, the job of
teaching children to read and develop
their love for reading does not stop at
school. Find out how you can create a
wonderful environment for reading in
your own home.
For our Featured School, we head to
Sharjah’s beautiful Corniche for a visit
to the Victoria International School
of Sharjah. Take a look at some of the
simple but very effective ways in which
they are redefining the way students
learn and how classroom space is used.
They also showcase their wonderful
lower school reading initiatives.
We also want to highlight the work

that schools are doing, and some of
the contributions that educators are
making to further promote and support
this reading agenda. We invite schools
to share photos and videos of of their
reading programmes in action via the
hashtag #teachuae on Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram.
If your idea of enjoying reading is laying
on a white, sandy beach with a good
book, you are in luck. In this issue, we
take you to the wonderful island of
Jamaica in our Travel Snapshots. After
feasting your eyes on some of the
striking attractions in Jamaica, check
out the shortlist of the great places to
retire that our finance writer, Aaron
Crotty has compiled for you.
In April, we will be publishing our
second guide to help parents find
the right school for their children. The
supplement, Education Choices, will
feature information on all the major
curricula being offered in the UAE.
Schools are invited to showcase their
institution to parents. Education Choices
will be distributed across the UAE with
The National Newspaper. Contact
Grace: [email protected] for more
information.
Thank you for joining us for another
exciting issue. We know that many of
you are anxious for the days to speed by
for spring break. Enjoy it when it comes!
