On April 3 , 1944 , the U . S . Supreme Court ruled 8 to 1 that African Americans cannot be barred from voting in the Texas Democratic primaries . The Court stated that discrimination against blacks violates the 15 th Amendment and that political parties are not private associations .

James Buchanan , America ’ s 15 th President was born on April 23 , 1791 , in Cove Gap , Pennsylvania . He w a s the only life-long bachelor to occupy the White House , and served just one term from 1857 to 1861 .

John James Audubon was an American ornithologist , naturalist , and painter . Born in Haiti on April 26 , 1785 , he was known for h i s extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats . His major work , a colour-plate book entitled The Birds of America ( 1827 – 1839 ), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed .

African American educator , Booker T . Washington was born on April 5 , 1856 . A renowned author and orator , he served as an advisor to two American Presidents and helped to make the Tuskegee Institute into a modern institution . Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community between 1890 and 1915 .
