On April 3 , 1944 , the U . S . Supreme Court ruled 8 to 1 that African Americans cannot be barred from voting in the Texas Democratic primaries . The Court stated that discrimination against blacks violates the 15 th Amendment and that political parties are not private associations .

His major work , a colour-plate book entitled The Birds of America ( 1827 – 1839 ), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed .
