CATHERINE ERPEN PLAYS HER PART TO FURTHER THE CAUSE OF DIVERSITY , EQUITY , INCLUSION AND JUSTICE
BY : LEISA GRACE WILSON
The work of anti-racism , diversity , equity , inclusion and justice ( DEIJ ) is not the work of some , it is work that all of us need to do . So much has been said on the topic in recent years , especially since the death of George Floyd in the United States of America in 2020 . The number one goal of schools should be to become inclusive and culturally sustaining environments for staff and students , but how many of us are truly doing the work that is necessary to achieve this goal ?
In this issue of Teach Middle East Magazine we speak with one school leader who is committed to learning and doing what it takes to ensure that her school truly becomes a place in which everyone can feel included . Take some time to get to know a little more about Catherine Erpen . Catherine is the principal of GEMS World Academy in Abu Dhabi . Catherine does not profess to being an expert on DEIJ , but she is intentional in learning more and implementing what she has learned in a bid to create a truly inclusive school for staff as well as students .
How long have you been an educator ?
I have been working in education for almost 20 years , most of which have been overseas in diverse contexts .
What do you enjoy most about your job and why ?
The role of Principal is a pleasure and a privilege . I love learning and helping others do the same . The work we do matters . It is a great responsibility , but incredibly rewarding . Every day is unique . I never know exactly what is going to happen , so I am constantly kept on my toes ! It ’ s a joy to work in partnership with parents and to see learners achieve more than they think possible .
