Personal Development There are times when the muscle in the mundane is reflected when its power requires, at the drop of a dime – in a New York minute - immediate attention, presentation, assessment or intervention. The Mundane is/are microscopic particulate(s) that join together to pack a punch – when necessary and often, when least expected. Excellence can be called to the carpet at any time. Excellence in craft, pedagogy or when contributing in any manner - can never be denied. Before there is excellence there is preparation. It may feel or appear “joyless” and without merit. It is not. It is actually a well-dressed disguise. The essence of the mundane, the main idea, like reading comprehension exercises, like looking at the universe through a Hubbell telescope is not always clearly shown. Like that seed that germinates and brings forth life, deep inside the rich blackness of the earth, it is moving through the mundane process of not being seen – until its leaves are miraculously bountiful. And like Daniel, the Karate Kid, see yourself beating what was at first glance – a Mountain Lion of mundane obstacles. In reality, your muscles are strengthening, but they need for you to be present, aware and to breathe. Don’t try to get to the next level until you’ve mastered the first (we often THINK we have mastered the first, when in reality, we have not). As the elder master Karate teacher Mr. Miyagi would say, “Breathing is very important. First learn to stand, then fly. Nature’s rule Daniel son, not mine.” Therein lies the joy. 86400. Seconds . . . At first glance . . . Very often in life, it is not what we look at, but what we SEE. Mundane tasks could be seen as a After The Bell | | Jan - Feb 2019 | 49
