When I joined Teach For Armenia ’ s Teacher Leadership Program , I was excited about the prospect of not only teaching Biology , but also sharing my passion for art with children in rural communities . Although it meant leaving behind two workplaces and turning down other opportunities , I knew that this was the right choice for me .
As a Teacher-Leader I have learned that children need to be exposed to high values and encouraged to strive for them , and I am particularly proud of the progress that my students have made . While leading them both inside and outside the classroom , I have seen firsthand their curiosities and interests grow . When I first began teaching , they were more interested in material possessions , with not a lot of regard for time management and concentration . But now , their inquisitive minds are engaging in extracurricular activities such as miniature painting , needlework , and carpet weaving , which in turn teaches them the values of teamwork , time management , and how their concentrated , collective efforts will allow them to take on and complete any task or challenge that comes their way . I am certain that they will continue to use these skills and lead one another after I complete my two-year commitment to teach in their community .
The energy and enthusiasm that I receive from my students are a constant reminder of the power of education and the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders in Armenia and Artsakh . As I reflect on this experience , I am grateful for the chance to work in the Syunik region , where I have formed meaningful relationships with local community members , and come to appreciate the simple things in life . I am also grateful to Teach For Armenia for providing me with the support that I needed to make a meaningful impact , and am proud to be part of an organization that is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of Armenia ’ s children .
