Junk Kouture Finalists
Two of our Wider Achievement teams reached the final of the Northern Ireland
Regional Final earlier this month. Due to the adverse weather it was postponed from
Thursday 1 March to Thursday 8 March and rescheduled from Londonderry to The Helix,
Dublin; the Scottish competition had been cancelled due to funding. This was an
amazing opportunity for our pupils and would not have been possible without the
support of the school fund, Parent Council and the parents of the young people involved.
Riptide, designed by S3 pupils, Rachel Lynn, Isla
Henderson and modelled by Evie was received by
a more than enthusiastic, mainly Irish, audience
in The Helix; they were still singing along to the
music after Evie had gone off stage!
Dragon Girl, designed by S3 pupils Hannah
Colthart, Eilidh Williams and modelled by Mia
was received by the Irish audience to Dragon
music and Mia worked hard on “slaying” the
crowd wi th her distinguished silhouette and head
piece in a red and mainly green colour scheme.
The girls had an amazing experience and
opportunity both in designing the outfits from
junk and in devising performances worthy of The
Helix in Dublin. We are very proud of their
achievements and how well they represented
the school.
S3 Edinburgh Zoo Trip
An exhilaratingly fun day was had by all S3 at Edinburgh Zoo on Thursday 8 March. It
was a beautiful, crisp, sunny winter’s day which caused the animals to be out in full
swing after being in hiding the previous week due to the ‘Beast from the East’.
Pupils began the day with a Biodiversity workshop where they looked into the key
concepts of biodiversity including genetics, species and ecosystem diversity. The
session also looked at threats to biodiversity and some of the conservation efforts that
are happening today.
Pupils and staff then roamed the zoo in awe of all the conservation work going on with
over 1,000 rare and endangered animals. Pupils were lucky to experience a once in a life
time moment when they heard an Asiatic lion roar!
