DRAMATURGICAL NOTE:
Set during the summer of 1899,
Newsies tells a toe-tapping
version of the real Newsboys’
Strike of 1899 in which more
than 5,000 newsboys and
countless child workers joined
forces to fight against media
tycoons William Randolph
Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. The
history of the real strike may not
have leaping boys and angelic
choruses, but the story is just as
inspirational as hearing “Seize the
Day” for the first time. Follow the
link below to learn more about how
the real newsies beat the odds as well
as some fun facts about the real-life
counterparts of characters in the show such
as Jack Kelly, Katherine Plumber, and Joseph
Pulitzer himself.
