Dear Taylion Families, Thank you for spending the last school year with us. It was a fun school year, and it was my honor to get to know you. For those of you just joining us- welcome to what is sure to become some of the best educational years of your time. While many of you are looking forward to summer; when school responsibilities are less, and fun opportunities abound, I cannot stress the importance of fitting into your daily routine some time to maintain and potentially even enhance on the skills you have already learned over the last school year. Research shows that "all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer" (White, 1906; Heyns, 1978; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al, 2004). Tips to maintain skills over the summer: - Take time to work in some reading every day. - Write in a journal. - Have students complete math worksheets (your teacher can provide you with some, if you are in need). - Play EDUCATIONAL games on a computer or device. -Stay Active! Many students get sluggish over the summer- now is the time to get outdoors! Play! Have fun! If you haven't already done so, please be sure to turn in your re-enrollment packet to ensure a space for your students. Thank you for your support of Taylion High Desert Academy!
