Patronage by King D. Manuel I
King Manuel I gave to certain intellectually gifted people the possibility of going abroad to study by giving them an income from the trading post in Flanders. In particular, the king’s foreman in Flanders, Francisco Pereira, was ordered to donate an income of 15 gold “cruzados” to Friar Joao Guerreiro de Tavira, Friar of the Order of St. Francis, in April 1517, to continue his studies, as a fellow.
The Portuguese crown, about six months earlier, had instituted another income, to another friar of Tavira, more precisely to Frei Marcos de Tavira, also of the order of St. Francis, so that he might have the opportunity to continue his studies at the university of Paris, donating him 15 “cruzados” as well.
King D. Manuel I was, in fact, a patron and he gave support for further and higher education to intellectually gifted people, in the best European universities, from the income of the trading post in Flanders.
