tradition of the carnival balls
continues to thrive in the city.
Many balls are held in beautiful
historic Viennese palaces and
offer a wide choice of rooms with
different musical styles allowing
dancers to enjoy not only the
classical three-quarter rhythm
of the Viennese waltz but also
dancing other ballroom dance
styles such as rock n´roll, salsa
or even disco music. Dancers
can, therefore, choose a ball
according to their profession but
also according to their musical
tastes and venue expectations.
In this rich historical context,
the university association
ArgentineTango@TUWien has
succeeded in reaching a truly
historic milestone in the diffusion
and promotion of Argentine
Tango. Indeed, since 2017 the
university association is in charge
of organizing an Argentine Tango
event including a milonga during
the Technische Universität Ball
(TU Ball – Ball of the Vienna
Technical University) that since
1815 is not only one of the oldest
and long-standing ball events
in Vienna but that also takes
place in the Imperial Palace
Hofburg where Viennese waltz
has been danced almost since its
beginning. In this respect, 2017
can be considered a key date for
Argentine Tango as for the first
time an Argentine Tango event
including a milonga has been
organized in the Imperial Palace
Hofburg within the context of a
traditional Viennese ball breaking
a taboo that had been lasting for
more than 200 years!
