Veterans and volunteers came together at the James A . Haley Veterans ’ Hospital on Saturday , November 16 , 2024 , for a community-focused wheelchair cleaning event aimed at providing veterans with the tools they need to maintain their independence .
Held at the hospital ’ s Spinal Cord Injury ( SCI ) basketball court , the event brought together over 40 participants , including veterans , family members , and volunteers from various organizations . The initiative , part of the hospital ’ s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for veterans , focused on providing thorough cleaning and maintenance for wheelchairs and other mobility devices .
“ We ’ re here to give back to our veterans , to help them take care of the tools they rely on for their independence ,” said Kevin White , chief of the hospital ’ s Spinal Cord Injury Unit . “ For many of these veterans , these wheelchairs are essential , and ensuring they ’ re properly maintained is an important part of their care .”
The event was part of the hospital ’ s broader effort to support the vocational and independent living needs of veterans through its Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service ( PMRS ). The program , which offers a range of tailored services , addresses both the physical and psychological needs of veterans , with a focus on helping individuals regain independence , improve job skills , and integrate back into the workforce .
“ I am a firm believer in supporting our nations heroes in any way we can ,” said Bryan Garrison ,
event coordinator . “ This wheelchair wash is just an example of our commitment to our veterans . This is the least we can do to show how much they are appreciated and respected .”
“ This event means a lot to me ,” said Army veteran Bruce Witham , who attended the event . “ It ’ s great to see so many people come together to help veterans like me . And having the opportunity to learn about new programs to help with work and daily living is just a bonus .”
The wheelchairs , which are essential for many veterans with spinal cord injuries , were thoroughly cleaned , sanitized , and inspected for wear and tear . Volunteers helped veterans adjust the chairs for maximum comfort and functionality .
The PMRS Program at the Tampa VA has been instrumental in helping veterans overcome challenges related to their medical conditions , providing them with training and support to achieve their personal and professional goals . Whether it ’ s learning new skills or finding ways to live independently , the program plays a key role in helping veterans regain confidence and self-sufficiency .
Saturday ’ s event not only helped ensure that veterans ’ mobility devices are functioning at their best but also highlighted the importance of comprehensive rehabilitation services for veterans of all backgrounds .
“ We want veterans to know that they ’ re not alone ,” said White . “ Whether it ’ s through rehabilitation services , cleaning a wheelchair , or simply providing a little extra support , we ’ re here for them every step of the way .”
The wheelchair cleaning event was one of several ongoing initiatives at the James A . Haley Veterans ’ Hospital to improve the lives of veterans , ensuring they receive the care , support , and opportunities they deserve .
