The James A . Haley Veterans ’ Hospital celebrated a special occasion at the USO Room on September 6th , 2024 , honoring Army Veteran James “ Sonnie ” Proctor on his 100th birthday . Surrounded by Spinal Cord Injury leadership , staff and his family , this incredible centenarian received a surprise party .

The James A . Haley Veterans ’ Hospital celebrated a special occasion at the USO Room on September 6th , 2024 , honoring Army Veteran James “ Sonnie ” Proctor on his 100th birthday .
Surrounded by Spinal Cord Injury leadership , staff and his family , this incredible centenarian received a surprise party .
Proctor , who was born in Harris Neck , McIntosh County , Georgia , in 1923 , served in the Army from 1945 to 1947 . After his military service , he became a successful commercial shrimper , owning a boat named “ Sun Ray ,” part of the historical fleet of shrimp boats that docked off the 22nd St . Causeway . His dedication both during and after his military service was honored during the celebration .
One of the event ’ s highlights was a heartfelt message from his family , who reflected on his life story and wished him a Happy 100th Birthday .
“ It ’ s an honor to be part of my dad ’ s life and celebrate this milestone with him ,” said Robert Johnson , proud of his father ’ s contributions as a Veteran and community leader .
In addition to Proctor ’ s family , the event was attended by several members of the SCI ’ s leadership , who spoke about the importance of honoring Veterans and ensuring their stories are remembered .
“ Veterans like James Proctor exemplify the values we uphold at this hospital ,” said Melissa Suggs , outpatient rehabilitation coordinator . “ It ’ s such a privilege to share in these celebrations .”
As Sonnie celebrated his century of life , the event was a reminder of the vital contributions Veterans make both during and after their service .
