QUEZON CITY--The Department of the Interior and Local
Government (DILG) led on Sunday, April 28 some 20,000 runners
who joined the fun run meant to strengthen its call for actions over
Manila Bay’s rehabilitation.
Dubbed as “DILG Takbo Para sa Kalikasan”, runners
from different barangays in Metro Manila and representatives from
different government agencies and the private sector joined a 3-km
advocacy run along Roxas Boulevard to Burnham Green, Rizal Park
in Manila.
DILG Secretary Eduardo M. Año said with the big
number of participants who joined the event, he hoped it increased
awareness among the public and elicited positive changes for the
environment in their respective communities.
“Inumpisahan natin ang ‘laban’ sa Manila Bay pero
hindi dito nagtatapos ang ating laban para sa kalikasan. Umpisahan
natin ang kampanya para pangalagaan ang kapaligiran sa ating sari-
sariling komunidad,” he said.
Responding to the threats posed by the worsening
condition of Manila Bay, DILG earlier called on local government
units (LGUs) to participate in the Manila Bay rehabilitation program.
Since its launching in January, the said drive has brought
together a total of 281,560 volunteers to help for with the clean-up
drive directed by the DILG. These volunteers were able to collect
over three million kilos of thrash from the bay and have covered
about 5,700,000 meters of waterways and roads.
Apart from mandating LGUs to take part in the said clean-
up, the DILG has also intensified its battle against establishments
found discharging untreated wastewater in the bay and likewise
ensuring proper sewage treatment and septage system in their
respective areas of concerns.
The fun run was organized by the Office of DILG
Assistant Secretary Marjorie N. Jalosjos. Other partners of the
Department for the activity are the Department of Environment &
Natural Resources (DENR), Metro Manila Development Authority
(MMDA), City Government of Manila, Philippine Commission
on Women, and ThinkSports.ph with Coca-Cola Philippines and
Holcim Philippines as major partners. (PIA InfoComm/DILG)
MMDA reimplements ‘heat stroke
break’ policy for field personnel
QUEZON CITY—The Metro Manila Development Authority
(MMDA) is reimplementing a policy that allows additional
30-minute daily “heat stroke break” to on-duty traffic enforcers
and street sweepers in order to cope with the summer heat.

memorandum to protect its field personnel from heat exhaustion,
heat stroke and heat cramps due to severe heat wave.
Under the memorandum, traffic enforcers who work in
shift 5 am to 1 pm, the prescribed “heat stroke break” is from 10
am to 10:30 am or 10:30 am to 11 am; for those working from 1
pm to 9 pm shift, the break time shall be observed from 2:30 pm
to 3 pm or 3 pm to 3:30 pm; and for 2 pm to 10 pm shift, the break
time shall be observed from 3 pm to 3:30 pm or 3:30 pm to 4 pm.
For street sweepers who are on-duty from 6 am to 2 pm,
the prescribed “heat stroke break” is from 11 am to 11:30 am or
11:30 am to 12 noon; for 7 am to 4 pm shift, they shall observe 12
noon to 1 pm regular break time; while those working from 11 am
to 7 pm shall observe 2:30 pm to 3 pm or 3 pm to 3:30 pm break
time.
According to the MMDA chair, on-duty field personnel
are allowed to leave their posts in shifts and take a break to allow
their bodies to cool down.
“Heat stroke break shall be done alternately by those
who are assigned in a particular area to maintain visibility of traffic
enforcers and street sweepers and to ensure that field operations
are not hampered,” said Lim.
Field personnel may also avail themselves of additional
15-minute break time in case the heat index in Metro Manila
reaches 40 degrees Celsius and above.
The policy shall take effect until May 31, 2019. (PIA
