MMDA to impose higher
fines for illegal parking
starting January
MAKATI—The Metro Manila Development Authority
(MMDA) will impose higher penalties for illegal parking
and yellow lane violations effective January next year.
In a press briefing held Wednesday, MMDA
General Manager Jojo Garcia said, drivers in Metro Manila
have few more days to improve their habit of parking just
anywhere or face increased penalty for illegal parking
starting January 7.
Garcia said penalty for illegal parking for attended
vehicles was raised to P1,000 from P200 currently; fine for
illegal parking for unattended vehicles was increased to
P2,000 from P500 currently; fine for obstructing the road
was increased to P1,000 from P150 currently.
He also said that fine for public utility buses
caught violating the ‘yellow lane rule’—meaning leaving
their designated lanes along major thoroughfare was
increased to P1,000 from the current P500.
The penalty increase was based on regulations
signed by the Metro Manila Council (MMC), the governing
and policy-making body of the MMDA, recently.
“We are still fixing our ticketing collection
system for traffic violations so we decided to move the
implementation,” said Garcia.
Once implemented, Garcia warned vehicle
owners that they can be fined for illegal parking plus
obstruction, twice a day for the same violations.
He also reminded motorists who park their
vehicles in front their houses that they do not own the
road.
“Vehicle owners thought that they own the road
in front of their houses. They have benefited long enough.
It’s time for motorists and the government to utilize the
thoroughfare,” Garcia said.
Garcia reiterated that motorists are prohibited
from parking their vehicles on all national highways,
including Mabuhay lanes.
“This directive covers all public roads except
in subdivisions and roads covered by existing parking
ordinances,” said Garcia. (PIA-NCR)
Employment generation,
job quality improved
MANILA -- More Filipinos are getting employed and more
workers are now enjoying stable employment for 2018, the
labor department reported.
Based on the October 2018 Labor Force Survey (LFS)
conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA),
826,000 jobs were generated for 2018, making a total of
41.160 million employed workers, which is 2.0 percent
higher than the 40.334 million employed workers recorded
last year.
“The employment situation in the Philippines
continues to improve as more Filipinos are getting
employed through increased job opportunities in various
sectors, such as the Build Build Build infrastructure
program of the administration. This mainly helped us
sustain the rise in employment. Also, more workers
are now enjoying security of tenure,” Labor Secretary
Silvestre Bello III said.
Also, unemployed Filipinos decreased by
140,000, a 5.3 percent or 0.4 percent decrease from the 5.7
unemployment rate recorded last year.
The October 2018 LFS also noted improvements
in the quality of employment as the number of remunerative
and stable wage employment reached 26.6 million, which
is 2.9 percent or 743,000 wage employment compared to
the same period in 2017.
Full-time employment also grew by 4.7 percent,
reaching 29.3 million in October 2018, from 28.0 million
last year.
As of October 2018, DOLE’s campaign against
illegal forms of contractualization has so far netted
411,449 regularized workers, 70 percent of whom have
been voluntarily regularized while the 30 percent were
regularized through inspection.
“This can be attributed to DOLE’s strict
enforcement of campaign against illegal contractualization,
as well as to the department’s strengthened employment
facilitation services and enhanced social protection
programs for our workers,” Bello said.
However, underemployment remains a challenge
with 6.735 million underemployed workers in 2018, a
3.5 percent or 229,000 higher from the 6.506 million
underemployed workers reported last year. (Abegail De

HELPTheHomelessPH, we hope to raise public
awareness about the condition of homeless families,
street children and unattached individuals staying
on the streets and to show them that there are better,
appropriate and responsible means of helping our
homeless kababayans instead of just giving alms,”
Relova said.
The DSWD also collaborated with MPD’s
“Ang Guro Kong Pulis” project to provide basic
education to street kids through their mobile library
and film showing activity, while the DOH conducted
free medical and dental services to homeless families
staying in the area.
Social workers were also present to answer
queries on the programs and services of the DSWD.
“We are very glad to call our partners in the
activity as HELP Champions because of their dedication
in providing the right types of assistance to street
children and homeless families. We hope that we can
encourage more people to do the same, not only for this
holiday season, but also in the future,” Relova said.
Revola added that there is more work needed to
dismantle the inequality, discrimination, and exclusion
experienced by street dwellers.
“We need the help of more people to become
champions by giving the right forms of assistance that
will bring back the dignity and empower the lives of our
homeless kababayans,” she said. (PIA-NCR)

Taun-taon, napakarami ng nabibiktima ng
paputok.
ating buhay. Mapayapa at masaganang Bagong Taon sa
ating lahat! (PIA-NCR)

mga first time na magpapasuso.
