patient suspected of MERS-CoV yielded negative
of the virus.
DOH4A spokesperson Glen Ramos stated
that the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine
has confirmed the findings last night, February
20.
Before the result was release, the patient
suspected to have developed symptoms of the
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus
or MERS-CoV remained under monitoring after
blood samples were taken for testing.
“The patient is alive,” Ramos said
dispelling reports that the patient had died.
The 47 year-old male patient from Laguna,
who arrived last February 14 from the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia, is said to have experienced fever
and cough and immediately went to the Laguna
Doctor’s Hospital in Santa Cruz, Laguna as a
precautionary measure.
He said the Laguna Doctor’s emergency
room has resumed operations after it was
temporarily shut down for decontamination, a
standard procedure in all infectious cases.
“There’s no reason to be afraid in going to
the hospital,” Ramos said.
Since the patient tested negative, it is
now clear that MERS-CoV does not exist in the
country. (Joy Gabrido, PIA4A)
