The annual celebration aims to promote Cavite coffee varieties for domestic and worldwide consumption, to encourage and revive the interest of farmers towards coffee farming, increase coffee yields through proper techniques and skills training, and to create a competitive coffee price in the world market. The municipality of Amadeo being dubbed as the Coffee Capital of the Philippines boasts of its 4,508 hectares of coffee farmland, the largest land area devoted to coffee farming in the entire upland of Cavite, making it the province’s biggest coffee producer. Several activities for the festival are lined up for the local and tourist revelers to enjoy like the search for the “Coffee Queen” or the “Mutya ng Pahimis”, coffee talk and demonstrations, the unique coffee dance marathon and the yearly float parade, revealed Amadeo tourism officer Jam Tibayan. Other activities also include a thanksgiving mass, recognition of the Most Outstanding Coffee Farmer, exhibit of local food/delicacies, a trade fair, a variety of shows for the entertainment of guests and a coffee farm tour on Day 1 promoting the agri-tourism sites. MARIANO ALVAREZ, Cavite, (PIA) -- The municipal government of General Mariano Alvarez (GMA), the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the EcoWaste Coalition, a non-government organization, partner recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the “Cavite Zero Waste Project.” Held at the Materials Recovery Facility in Poblacion1 in the municipality, the signing was led by GMA Mayor Walter Echevarria, Jr. stating that this initiative will complement and reinforce the earnest efforts to clean up the barangays, reduce garbage generation, and heighten municipal compliance to R.A. 9003. The said project will strengthen the overall implementation of the national ordinance also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act through direct capacity building activities in seven focal barangays and outreach interventions for the 20 other barangays all over the municipality. This initiative is in cooperation with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office led by Michael Templonuevo had been in the forefront of this environment clean and is implementing the safe closure and rehabilitation of its controlled waste disposal site. In addition, it operates a biogas digester at Nicolasa Virata Public Market that is capable of treating 50 kilos of biodegradable market and waste wastewater daily and runs a portable biogas digester for household and community use that is able to treat three kilos of domestic waste per day. EcoWaste Coalition president Eileen Sison expressed enthusiasm for the project’s success as she hopes “to translate to greater citizens’ awareness and involvement on ecological solid waste management (EWSM) at the barangay level.” The organization will conduct a study on household ESWM practices, implement a capacity building program for the seven focal barangays, and provide technical assistance to these barangays to enhance existing SWM ordinances. Likewise, the group will also initiate awareness and outreach activities to the other 20 barangays and the association of junk shop operators and waste pickers in the municipality.
