LGU Kalayaan launches new coffee product
addressing tomato oversupply
By Joy Gabrido
CALAMBA
CITY,
Laguna, (PIA) – The Local
Government of Kalayaan
addressed
the
tomato
oversupply, that challenged
the locality last October, by
launching the first coffee
product with tomato in the
province.
As part of the
111th Foundation and 8th
Kamoteng Kahoy Festival
of the Municipality, the
Kalayaan Food Products
Coffee with Tomato was
launched coinciding the
Agri Congress that gathered
Kalayaan farmers, including
tomato producers, last March
20.
M u n i c i p a l
Agriculture Office (MAO)
Head Liza Yee said that
after the problem of tomato
oversupply broke out last
year, their office immediately
sat down with various
government agencies such as
the Department of Agriculture
(DA), Department of Science
and Technology (DOST) and
Laguna State Polytechnic
University
(LSPU)
to
come up with a sustainable
solution.
After brainstorming
and discussing all possible
considerations, they have
decided to produce tomato
powders instead of tomato
wine or ketchup which have
higher competition and are
more expensive to process,
among other reasons.
The Shared Service
Facilities funded by DOST
and housed in LSPU Sta.
Cruz Campus was utilized
by the local government for
the processing of the tomato
powder.
Through
the
DOST,
LGU
Kalayaan
linked with the private
entity Blue Macay Food
Manufacturing Corporation
that manufactured its coffee
product mixed with the
tomato powder they have
produced.
“The
product
is
all natural as it constitutes
Barako coffee and real
tomatoes processed into
powder so it is surely
healthy particularly rich in
lycopene,” Yee said.
A total of 20,000
sachets of Coffee with
Tomato were produced by
the LGU. The products are
currently being sold through
reselling and promoted in
social media. Many business
individuals
have
been
expressing their interest to
buy and resell the product.
The
product’s
launching promo costs only
Php 5.00, but the Suggested
Retail Price (SRP) is Php
10.00 and the reseller price is
Php 7.50.
The project had been
ultimately helpful as it hits
two birds with one stone
in addressing the tomato
oversupply
while
also
providing additional source
of income to stakeholders.

Napagkasunduan dito
na magde-deputize ng ilang
barangay tanod mula sa coastal
barangay upang makatulong ng
TDRO sa pagsasaayos ng trapiko
at parking areas sa paligid ng
Monte Maria.
Upang mas mapadali sa
mga biyahero, maglalagay ang
TDRO ng mga signage kagaya
ng entrance at exit, at iba pang
traffic reminders alinsabay ng
pagpapatupad ng truck ban sa
mga apektadong lugar mula 3:00
ng madaling araw hanggang sa
9:00 ng gabi simula Abril 17
hanggang 19.
Magtatalaga
naman
ang Batangas City Police Office
ng kanilang police personnel
upang pangalagaan ang seguridad
ng mga mananampalataya, at
magtatalaga rin ng mga health
worker ang City Health Office, at
emergency management team ang
City Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management Office (CDRRMO).
Magkakaroon lamang
ng isang lugar para sa mga
magtitinda upang hindi makasikip
sa daloy ng trapiko. Hinihikayat
ng
komitiba ang mga samahan ng
kababaihan sa coastal barangay
na magtinda ng kanilang
produkto hindi lamang upang
kumita kundi upang maipakilala
rin ang mga lokal na produkto.
Sa pamamaraang ito, hindi
lamang ang lugar ang maaaring
tumatak sa mga bisita kundi
maging ang mga produktong
maaaring magbigay sa kanila ng
mas malaking oportunidad sa mas
malaking merkado.
Tiniyak
naman
ni
General Services Officer Jocelyn
Cantre na siyang tumayong
presiding officer sa pagpupulong
na may truck na hahakot ng
basura sa lugar araw –araw mula
Lunes Santo hanggang Linggo
ng Pagkabuhay. Maglalagay ang
mga barangay ng magkakabukod
na basurahan upang pangalagaan
ang kalinisan dito at magli-
instala rin ng mga tarpaulin ukol
sa paalaala para sa kalinisan at
kaayusan ng paligid ng Monte
Maria. (Bhaby P. De Castro-PIA
