“When you write say you’re going to write a book, you have to do it,” said Hanson, who eventually finished “Who is Gym? The Stories Behind Arizona’s High School Sports Venues.”
Hanson details the namesake of every high school football field, gymnasium as well as other facilities.
Hanson, a principal in the public relations firm HMA, said the names he enjoyed researching most were ones with interesting and largely unknown backstories.
Two were for venues in Bisbee. Opened in 1909, Warren Ballpark is home to Bisbee High School football and baseball. Warren Ballpark was also to a number of minor league baseball teams.
The facility is named after George Warren. George Warren’s name might be unfamiliar to Arizonans today, but his likeness shouldn’t be. He was the model for the miner in state seal.
