Atlanta Bar Foundation Update
As usual, it has been a busy fall at the Atlanta Bar Foundation as we continue our work serving the Atlanta community.
As readers saw in the last issue of The Atlanta Lawyer, we celebrated the 25th running of the Legal Runaround in late August. A terrific crowd of runners and walkers came out to raise money for the Foundation’ s Police Scholarship Fund, and we were honored to have Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Police Chief Darin Schierbaum join us in support of this important cause.
We also took advantage of this milestone year to recognize the person who has been the driving force behind the Legal
Runaround since its inception: Louis Cohan. In Louis’ s honor, we renamed our annual peace officer award the Louis Cohan Peace Officer of the Year Award— a fitting tribute to his extraordinary commitment to the event, the Foundation, and Atlanta’ s law enforcement community.
Fall also means that our annual grants process is kicking into high gear. Since the program began in 2010, the Atlanta Bar Foundation, in partnership with the Atlanta Bar Association’ s Lawyer Referral and Information Service, has awarded more than $ 2.5 million to Atlanta-area legal nonprofits, helping these organizations carry out their critical work throughout our community. the 25th Annual Legal Runaround Video Recap!
Applications for the 2026 grant cycle are already out, and our Grants Committee, led by Ryan Walsh of Jones Day, will spend the coming weeks reviewing the applications and making its recommendations by the end of November. Then comes one of our favorite Foundation traditions: our annual Grants Celebration luncheon in December. Once again, Wade Malone and Nelson Mullins have generously agreed to host the event, where we will celebrate this year’ s grantees, recognize the important work they do, and— most importantly( especially to them)— present them with their checks.
It’ s a busy season, but one that reminds us exactly why the Atlanta Bar Foundation exists: to bring Atlanta’ s legal community together to support the people and organizations making a difference in our city.
