IN THE PROFESSION
“ Marvin Wolley is the answer that most patrons can’ t find anywhere else in the courthouse. He is patient and compasionate and always eager to assist. The Self-Help Center is primarily for State Court, but Mr. Wooley’ s wealth of institutional knowledge and his demeanor, make it perhaps the most trusted resource center of all the Fulton County Courts. He is a true Unsung Hero.” Adasha Battle, Chief Deputy Clerk Civil Division."

Unsung Heroes: Fulton County State Court’ s Marvin Wooley

Walking into the Fulton County courts complex can be daunting. The establishment of the Fulton County State Court Self-Help Center in 2011, one of the first in the State, was designed to assist pro se litigants and attorneys alike. The Center offers access, information, and support services to anyone by providing public access e-file terminals, self-help videos, legal forms, and legal research materials. All are valuable resources; however, the real“ gem” of the center, is one of its long time State Court employees, Marvin Wooley.
If you have ever met Marvin Wooley, you would remember. His infectious smile and warm manner are the first things that greet you. If he has ever suffered from a bad day, you would never know. Along with his delightful demeanor, comes his extensive knowledge of the Fulton Courts, especially State Court, its processes, and policies.
TAL: When did you start working at the Self-Help Center and what are your daily tasks?
MARVIN: I have been with Fulton County for 17 years and started at the“ SHC” in 2014. Our mission is to assist the public with any questions or inquiries about the court system and their cases. All our files are electronic so even though it provides access, that can sometimes be difficult for the less tech savvy. We have six public e-filing terminals and can assist with filing lawsuits, answers, case research or simply the status of a case. We also provide forms and templates for both civil and criminal cases and can direct an individual in accessing legal research.
TAL: Besides pro se individuals, do you have many attorneys using the center?
MARVIN: Yes, you would be surprised how often attorneys come to file documents, have documents notarized, run copies of email exhibits or simple to do some quick research. We especially see attorneys when they are mid-trial and need something ASAP.
TAL: What is the most fulfilling part of your job?
MARVIN: Being able to help people is very rewarding. The court complex and the legal system is overwhelming for most people. The complex consists of several buildings and a variety of different courts. Having somewhere to go to get simple answers and direction is all people are looking for. Because court employees are prohibited from providing legal advice, employees often default to that response and people feel lost. Being able to provide some guidance and basic explanations can be so helpful to the public and pro se litigants. In that way the work is very satisfying.
