Ask the Board

Think about someone whose kindness, courage, or dedication makes an impact, yet rarely gets the spotlight. Who is your unsung hero, and how have they touched your life or community?

It’ s hard to write this without seemingly patting myself on the back, lol, but I recently saw first-hand how early exposure to community events can make an impression on kids. Kids see their parents and caregivers working hard and working late“ because they’ re lawyers.” But rarely do the kids get to see the special kind of impact lawyers can have on a community. My kids were just enthralled by the Legal Runaround and Run for Justice this year. They participated and wanted to hear all about who and how people benefited from the events, and their participation made the experience and the organizational goals personal for them. So, thank you to the lawyers who expose their families to those in need through the profession!

There are many“ unsung heroes” that come to mind for me. I would like to recognize the many Executive Directors and their staffs of so many worthy non-profit organizations in our community, and beyond, who are valiantly continuing to serve their constituents in these trying times. I would also recognize the lawyers in our community who continue to support those organizations with pro bono legal service. The time is now for the legal community to step in and support these organizations with our time, treasure, and talent. It is needed now more than ever before. In particular, I would recognize Rachel Spears and Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta. PBPA has supported over 1000 non profits with their legal needs. PBPA could not do this without the support of countless volunteer attorneys. Thanks to all who serve and let’ s not forget the mission of the Atlanta Bar Association:“ Lawyers Who Serve.”

Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz is my personal hero. Admiral Nimitz commanded the United States Pacific Fleet during World War II. He was known for his quiet strength and humility while navigating some of the most challenging times facing our country. Most tellingly, Admiral Nimitz respectfully declined a museum in his honor after the war, but rather he asked that it be dedicated to all the soldiers and seamen that served in the Pacific Theatre.
