Beginning with this April 2024 issue , we launch a new TAL feature , “ Sister Bar Spotlight ” amplifying the achievements , initiatives , and unique contributions of Atlanta ’ s local voluntary bar associations . We hope the Sister Bar Spotlight creates greater awareness of local bar associations and fosters deeper connections within our legal community .
GATE CITY BAR ASSOCIATION
The Gate City Bar Association ( GCBA ) is the oldest African-American bar association in the state of Georgia . In 1948 , the Gate City Bar Association was established by the ten sole African-American lawyers in Atlanta to provide the educational , social , and community involvement of a professional association for African-American lawyers . Formed during a time of segregation , Gate City Bar Association aimed to provide African-American lawyers with the opportunity to protect themselves as well as members of their community . It continues its work today to ensure equal rights are protected and justice is served .
Bar Association is also very active in the community and operates a summer camp for minority high school students who are interested in pursuing a legal career . The organization further helps its community by offering an annual workshop designed to help first-year law students . Membership in this organization is open to attorneys , judges , law students , and paralegals . The annual dues for Gate City Bar Association range from $ 20 for law students to $ 150 for judges .
