her( patented) design, wire fraud and data theft, as well as tough negotiations of terms and practices with manufacturers, retail stores, and trade show organizers.
Weisman soon realized that selling clothing, even or specifically in a niche market like swim- or board wear, is complex. By establishing and defending patents and trademarks, a brand safeguards its unique identity and market position. In the digital age, fashion businesses are increasingly vulnerable to online threats, necessitating robust cybersecurity measures to protect both company assets and customer information. Quality control, supply chain disruptions, and ethical labor practices are ongoing concerns that can significantly impact a brand’ s reputation and legal standing.
But Weisman is tough – and an over-achiever. Growing up, she danced ballet and was a talented artist which got her into the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. As an adult, she hosted elaborate dinner parties, serving food that her guests considered“ Michelinworthy.” She was – and is- a loving mom, invested in her kids’ education and extracurricular activities. Neither a horrible car accident that took her peripheral vision and caused her to permanently suffer from PTSD, nor the open hostility of the all-male circle of players in the close-knit“ surf and swim” landscape could stop her in becoming a successful entrepreneur, no matter how

many rocks life or business would throw in her path. With her sharp mind, confidence in her skills, and a support system of family and friends, she navigated the wild waters of the fashion industry, beating – to stay in the apt ocean metaphor – storms, sharks, and pirates.
Her memoir, a“ pandemic project,” reads almost like a diary. Weisman does not only describe her adventurous journey from stay-at-home mom to CEO, but she also provides details of growing up in a patchwork family. She depicts the relationship with her siblings and her never-ending quest for approval from her dad, who, like many fathers of his generation, would push her harder, higher, and faster, always critical, never satisfied. When I read that Weisman’ s father would never attend one of her dance performances(“ let me know when you became a primaballerina”) or dismissed FIT as“ Mickey Mouse college,” I laughed out loud and cried at the same time because this is exactly what my dad would say. Weisman openly shares her feelings, fears, and frustrations in colorful anecdotes. This gives credibility to her account – and makes for an entertaining read.
