What is your experience with AI and how is it useful?

Kevin Patrick Kevin Patrick Law
My experience with AI so far has been practical and eye-opening. Tools like AI-assisted drafting and summarization have helped streamline daily tasks— turning hours of work on research, records, or writing into minutes. This efficiency frees up more time to focus on what matters most: strategy, advocacy, and connecting with clients.
That said, I view AI as an assistant, not a replacement. The practice of law still requires judgment, empathy, and credibility— qualities no machine can replicate. AI is at its best when it supports lawyers in routine work, so we can devote more energy to the uniquely human aspects of lawyering.
Looking ahead, I plan to integrate AI tools more intentionally into my practice, particularly for research, case analysis, and workflow efficiency. At the same time, I remain mindful of the ethical responsibilities tied to this technology— confidentiality, accuracy, and oversight must always come first. In short, AI has great potential to enhance efficiency and improve client service. If used thoughtfully, it’ s not a substitute for lawyers, but an important tool to help us do what we do best: advocate for people.

My experience with AI so far has been mixed depending on the tool. A surprising amount of my time has gone into simply learning what is available and how to use it, which has been both challenging and rewarding. I have tried Canva and Co-Pilot to help with firm and CLE presentations, with results that are hit or miss. Some days it feels like it takes longer to wrestle with the program than to just build the slides myself, but I am hoping that is just part of the learning curve.
I have leaned on Siri to“ proofread”( really, to re-write) emails and texts so they come across more pleasant than I might feel in the moment. I have actually found ChatGPT most useful outside the office: quick recipes from whatever is in my fridge, marriage advice, plant-care tips, and parenting ideas for two boys under six.
So, while I do plan to keep experimenting with AI in my practice, so far it has been less about shortcuts and more about stretching into new ways of thinking. Sometimes it is clunky, sometimes it is helpful.
