‘Marbles’ 350mm x 255mm oil on board
Didactic and an ex fire-fighter the artist was born and raised in the coalfields of
Derbyshire, Martin Davis is an Artist who is reluctant to call himself by that ‘illustrious’
title. The reader may well disagree with him after viewing his work in TAG #3.
The examples Tubes have shown here are in the main still life - a genré of art that
goes as far back as Nathaniel Bacon, who painted with pride the produce of his
garden (Cook maid with Still Life - Vegetables and Fruit- 1620) Nathaniel was probably
didactic (self taught) too, so Martin is in very good company.
Martin’s work is blatantly realistic and finely painted. There is something simplistic in
the composition, witty with a touch of nostalgia (ref to the Glass Marbles paintings,
(see above painting). The only critic that could be made, is that it would be great to see
Martin ‘up-size’ his still life work.
