Do we love to learn or we ARE learning to earn?

In South Africa we have young people who are working or studying and not enjoying what they do and are just in for the money. So we spoke to a young professional and we asked ‘are young people loving to learn?

We find most young people just in it for the money and others not get getting paid what they deserve but they stick to that job because money is money at the end of the day and you know what they say about it being the root of all evil.

We had a conversation with Precious Mishombo a 23 three year old female and Journalism graduate who is now a content creator for another publication. She lives in Soweto, and has a bubbly personality and drive.

In high school I wanted to be many things, I wanted to be what you call today ‘slushy’ a woman of many talents or professions. But to answer you at first I wanted to do Law,

then Fashion and be a writer at the same time. So I suppose that I am still on the track list of what I wanted to study in high school because right now I am a journalist graduate and now a writer producing digital content.

I have always loved writing and reading, in primary school I always had a diary and wrote everything about my everyday events. I still have those diaries even today. I really enjoyed story telling. I love to learn and always have! I chose this career because that makes me happy and I understand it more. At the end of the day I am happy.

I think that young people settle for low paying jobs because they are uninformed. They do not know their worth in that company. They did not research on how much that work pays or compare how much other employees are getting in that field in the company. Of course let us not forget the amount one is expected to receive as a junior, to executive positions so one should not oversell themselves above their level positions. And not undersell either, here is an example if the job is offering to pay R 10 000 they should ask for R 13 000 or ask if the salary is open for negotiations. Young people settle because they are afraid to speak up. They think they should accept what they are being offered.

I use to work and study at the same time. I was not getting a salary I was working to gain experience. I was getting transportation allowance and in that job I was taught about the work place especially as a young person and about rights as an employee and how much you are worth.

If you are still at school remember that honestly life really begins after high school. Just plan carefully. And if you still do not have future plans take your time to think about what you want to do after school. You will face challenges, but you have what it takes to overcome them. Your happiness is more important than your pay cheque. Therefore love to learn do not learn to earn.
