UBER-FLASHMOB
Holiday flashmobs have become the new expected entertainment highlights
during the holiday season. Germany’s MFI center manager, however, took
the concept to new heights last December when it invited then 83-year-old
conductor Gotthilf Fischer to lead an expected half a million shoppers in
20 Arcaden Shopping centers across the country in a Christmas carol
flashmob that was shown on giant screens in all participating sites and
streamed live over the Internet.
Mr. Fischer stepped onto the stage at 3 p.m. on December 3rd at the
Riem Arcaden in Munich, where the event’s biggest crowd was assembled.
He started them off with Silent Night, which proved to be the most popular
one of all, and moved on to other holiday classics—MFI made sure the
scattered “choir members” knew the words, having posted them ahead
of time on Facebook. Mr. Fischer then made a special appearance at the
Pasing Arcaden later that afternoon.
According to Riem Arcaden center manager Wolfgang Kropp, shoppers
can already mark down their calendars for the second annual flashmob.
Apparently, Mr. Fischer agreed on the spot to conduct the Christmas carols
again this year.
