Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Thornton Academy,
Our Postscripts cover story profiles Bob Atwood’ 67, an alum who has led or co-led dozens of scientific and archeological expeditions worldwide. As I marvel at his lifetime of adventure, I know that countless Thornton Academy alums have and continue to live equally extraordinary lives of meaning and purpose – and that’ s ultimately what we want for each of our current and future students.
For over 200 years, Thornton Academy has upheld its mission to prepare students for a changing world. And that includes encouraging students to explore interests and discover their passions among our vast academic, arts, athletic, and community service offerings. We are fortunate to have dedicated and inspiring teachers, coaches, counselors, and advisors who are passionate about their work, and share that passion with students. We are committed to supporting the individual needs and goals of every student by offering the most comprehensive program of studies of any school in Maine. From calculus-based AP Physics to courses on Maine fish and wildlife, there truly is something for every student at Thornton Academy, regardless of ability or interest.
At school-wide assemblies, I often speak to students about our vision for TA as a school where each student can be who they are and become who they want to be. In this edition of Postscripts, you’ ll read about Thornton Academy alums and current students who are fulfilling that vision by pursuing and excelling at a wide array of professional interests and opportunities here at school.
Whether our students follow in the globetrotting footsteps of fellow alum Bob Atwater or choose to pursue their own adventure, Thornton Academy is committed to providing the opportunities and support to prepare each student for whatever path lies ahead.
As we look forward to the spring season here on campus, I invite you to show your support for our students and staff by attending our annual Thornton Fund Auction on May 17. This special event supports critical programming, expands academic opportunities, ensures free breakfast and lunch for students in need, and enhances the quality of experiences across campus. If you can’ t attend the live event, you can still participate through our online auction, May 5-9. You can learn more at www. ThorntonAcademy. org / auction.
I hope to see you there!
Best,
FROM THE HEADMASTER
