Remembering MARYLLYN ( RUMERY ) FAIRFIELD , CLASS OF 1936
Maryllyn Fairfield , believed to be Thornton Academy ’ s oldest alumni , died peacefully at her daughter ’ s home in Connecticut on October 15 , 2023 . She was 105 .
Maryllyn was born on July 27 , 1918 in Saco , the daughter of Jeannette Scamman and Jesse Earle Rumery . She attended Saco schools , and met her future husband , Roy P . Fairfield ‘ 36 at Thornton . The two married in 1939 and had one daughter , Donna . After Thornton , Maryllyn attended the Trull Nursing School in Biddeford , graduating in 1938 . She worked as a private nurse in Saco and later at Ohio University Elementary School in Athens , Ohio .
Maryllyn had a passion for cultural history and discovery . She and Roy traveled extensively , visiting
Europe , Canada , as well as East and West Africa . In the 1950s , the family lived in Greece . Maryllyn ’ s and Roy ’ s families have roots in Saco and Biddeford dating back to colonial times , and Maryllyn was known for her stories about the area and their families .
The Fairfields were charter members of the 1811 Society . “ They both really honored and loved Thornton ,” says Donna Fairfield .
Maryllyn was predeceased by her husband , Roy , and by her brothers Earle Rumery ‘ 36 and Reed Rumery ‘ 43 .
