TA Athletic Complex
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Thornton Academy is excited to announce that final drawings for the new Athletic Complex are in hand and the bidding process for a general contractor is underway ! Work with the City of Saco and the state of Maine has begun to secure all necessary permitting . If you have been on campus , you may have also seen that Phase 1 of the project – moving our Facilities Building – has already begun in anticipation of the repurpose and renovation of the existing building into an Athletic Center .
As you may know , TA does not receive any taxpayer funds for capital projects , and must rely on the generosity of alumni , parents , and friends to enhance and maintain our campus . It is not too late to say “ count me in '' and join us as we build upon the proud traditions that make TA such a special place .
Our Board of Trustees will select a general contractor in late spring and a timeline for construction will be determined at that time . We know our TA community is eagerly awaiting those details , and we look forward to providing more updates on the project .
We offer our sincere gratitude to those who have made gifts in support of this project . Though the initial fundraising goal of $ 3 million has been reached , increased construction and material costs has resulted in us seeking to raise additional funds towards the Athletic Complex Capital Campaign .
Above : Moving our Facilities team to a new location is the first phase of the Athletic Complex Capital Campaign .

Still On The Court
Another three-sport athlete during her time at TA , Joan ( Crogan ) Youngs
‘ 54 remains as active as ever . In May of 2022 , Joan traveled from her home in Connecticut to Fort Lauderdale to compete in the Senior Olympics . She returned home with bronze medals in basketball and javelin , along with a silver medal in discus . Unfortunately she also suffered a torn achilles tendon on the court .
“ No sports for 6 months , but back to all , including my favorite , skiing ,” she tells Postscripts . “ I ’ m bringing my whole family to Sugarloaf in April to celebrate birthday number 86 .” After a knee replacement three years ago , doctors told Joan to lay off the moguls and double-diamond trails , but you ' ll still see her on black diamonds . 9
