Leonard G . Johnson passed away peacefully on Feb . 1 , 2023 , surrounded by family .
Leonard was born in Saco on Nov . 16 , 1928 . He was the tenth of 11 children born to Arlington F . and Lillian Hayford Johnson . He attended schools in Saco , graduating from Thornton Academy in 1947 .
Soon after , he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for over 20 years . After retiring in 1968 as a master sergeant , Leonard started Lenco , Inc . where he sold and serviced Troy-Built rototillers and other lawn and garden equipment . He was a life member of V . F . W ., DAV ., A . F . Sergeant Association , and sponsor of the A . F . memorial in Washington , D . C .
Leonard is remembered for his love of dancing . Beginning at 13 years old , Leonard was practicing dance steps from illustrations in a Dale Evans dance book , preparing himself for the many barn dances that he would attend in high school . He was voted best dancer for the class of 1947 and went on to teach ballroom dance in Denver at the Ernie Miller Dance School . In 2015 , the renovated dance studio at Thornton was named in his honor and in recognition of his legacy as a member of the 1811 Society .
