An opportunity in the Global Soccer Division brought Dave back to the U . S . Nike was considering a major sponsorship of the Brazilian Soccer team , and Dave presented a financial analysis
Other than the ability to hit a set shot under pressure , Dave ’ s success can be attributed to his appetite for knowledge . “ You ' ve got to be a sponge on every job . You should have a desire to learn something new ,” he says . “ I wanted to understand everything behind the numbers , not just put numbers on a piece of paper .”
Understanding the intricacies of the organization helped Dave land his final job at Nike , as a Sales Analyst , where he revamped the inventory management of product samples used by sales staff .
In addition to spending time with his two grandchildren , Dave ’ s retirement plans include gardening , working in the yard , camping , and fishing , something he ’ s enjoyed since his early days in Saco .
Dave then helped Nike launch a new division focusing on equipment sales . The job also led to occasional meetings with sports superstars , such as Michael Jordan , Kobe Bryant , Bo Jackson , Cal Ripkin , and Tony Gwynn .
Dave also found himself on the basketball court in front of 1,000 people , taking on pro players Scotty Pippin and Penny Hardaway in a game of “ Around the World .”
The game calls for players to shoot from a series of spots on the court ( around the world ). An avid sports fan and intramural player during his days at TA . Dave finished second , losing to Pippin , but beating Hardaway . Dave opted to compete with set shots ( feet on the ground ) rather than jump shots , something Pippin found amusing . “ He tried to slip a buck under my shoes as I shot , saying I didn ' t get enough air ,” recalls Dave .
