IAN SACHS

MAJOR : Biology and Environmental Science HOMETOWN : Cherry Hill , Nj .
Biology and Environmental Science double-major Ian Sachs ’ s passionate pursuit of beekeeping landed him directly in the hive of bee research at Stevenson .
An Honors student and Leadership Scholar , Ian has had access to various experiential learning opportunities with faculty and industry experts who are active in his field on interest . “[ My professors ] put me in contact with renowned researchers ,” Ian notes . “ Without Stevenson I would not have any of the opportunities I have currently .”
For Ian , academic opportunities transcend the classroom — a cornerstone of the Stevenson experience . Ian is the first recipient of the James and Jacqueline Stradtner Endowed Internship in Environmental Sciences for the 2022-2023 academic year ; he will be using funds provided by the Endowed Internship to engage in research this summer at the USDA Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville , Maryland , with some of the top bee experts in the nation . His internship will combine laboratory and field research to study the effects of novel miticides on mites that infect honeybee colonies . “ During this time , I will also be going to Tanzania for a few weeks to conduct research over there on a different kind of beehive ,” Ian says .
The main insight Ian has taken away from his double studies in Biology and Environmental Science is , above all , to appreciate everything around him : “ When looking at the world through science , you realize just how complex and unique every living thing is , from a small plant to a massive animal .”
