Since she was young, Scarlet Dare’s passions lie at the crossroads of two unlikely subjects: nursing and theatre. At Stevenson, she was able to fuse the two into a unique experience.
Now as a senior nursing major with a minor in theatre and media performance, Scarlet works as a Student Nurse in the Labor and Delivery Unit at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) hospital while remaining active in SU's theatre program. Not only has she performed in dozens of plays and musicals—including having the opportunity to sing at the Sydney Opera House in Australia—but she also helped spearhead the Nursing Theatre initiative at Stevenson. Scarlet said, "When I began taking theatre classes my freshman year, I never imagined that the two departments I loved so much—nursing and theatre—would ever combine."
Nursing Theatre uses standardized patients, played by actors and actresses from Stevenson's theatre program, in simulation for nursing students. Scarlet, though, is able to gain perspective from both sides. "I participated as a standardized patient twice, which gave me insight into the patient world, and improved my acting skills. Now as a senior, I am on the other side of these simulations, as the nurse, and I'm so proud to get to see these two fantastic departments combine for something so unique and incredible."
When she's not learning or simulating patient care, she's doing it. As part of the nursing program, Scarlet has gone through a variety of clinical rotations—including Union Memorial Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Sheppard Pratt, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and GBMC, where she now works. In January, she traveled to Ecuador for a Global Health Perspectives course. "It was a life-changing experience. I saw private and public hospitals, met a midwife and shaman, and got to dive into the healthcare system of an entirely different country. I also got to have a lot of fun—I walked the equator, spent the night in a rainforest, and made chocolate from scratch!"
Scarlet is now in the midst of graduating during an unprecedented time, and though transitioning to a career in the healthcare industry may bring about some uncertainty, she is confident in her preparedness. "I am proud to be entering a profession where I can so deeply care for others for the rest of my life. I could not imagine a career that is more rewarding."
