You’re touring the UK in January and
doing a few gigs up until and after then.
What’s it like doing gigs and singing your
songs to strangers – do you like it?
Broadly speaking, yes. If an audience gets
it then it’s bliss and you feel validated as a
writer and a musician. It’s not always the
case, but you have to have confidence in
what you do, and remember you’ll never be
everyone’s cup of tea. But sometimes you’ll
make someone cry, or you’ll just realise the
room is silent and so attentive, and those
moments are the best.
‘If you were hit by a truck and you were
lying out there in that gutter dying, and
you had time to sing one song. One song
that people would remember before
you’re dirt. One song that would let God
know how you felt about your time here
on Earth.’ What song would you sing?
Maybe The Weight by The Band, or
Thunder Road, something defiant and full
of soul, with a big chorus. Wait! Mercedes
Benz! That one sounds like a prayer so
perhaps it’d be more appropriate.
