plates and strings – to noses, mouths and ears.
A few months ago, Steph invited us to The
Sensory Score – a fully choreographed concert
where sensory experiences are enhanced and
deepened, and our experience of listening to
the music was… well, like listening to heavy
metal on a rollercoaster eating cherry blossom
and pineapple. It was wild. It was soft. It was
a one-to-one experience with a dancer, who
blindfolded us, giving us bespoke tastes and
original scents and textures at choreographed
moments during the music.
We came out of the experience with acidblue tongues and beetroot skin. We had bear
hugs and felt ourselves tumbling through the
air while a trio of musicians played classical
music, while we were touched and brushed
and pushed and pulled.
Here, we chat with Steph to find out her ideas
behind The Sensory Score, her obsession with
creating classical concerts utilising synaesthesia,
and why all the beetroot.
