Creep forward – glimpse something
half up the grassy bank, stretched.
Direct children to sign on the other side.
Huge badger – must be a brock.
Motionless, in daylight.
Quell urge to climb bank,
curl around broad back.

Above: Emma-Jane Hughes was raised on a barge on the inland waterways, but swapped rivers and canals for the sea and now lives in the Witterings with her husband and two children. Whilst studying at Chichester University, her poem 'An experiment...' was the overall winning submission to The Modern Mind anthology. In 2012 her poem 'My Camel' gained a Highly Commended award in The Bridport Prize, and was published in The Winners anthology.
