Everyone has secrets – but not everyone acts on them. Xiaofan Wang is an exception. Editor, Annabelle
Carvell, talks to Xiaofan about giving up a career to become an artist, and whether it was all worth it

n May last year, Xiaofan Wang
gave up a career in engineering
to pursue a dream: she wanted
to paint. Risking everything to
follow her heart, Xiaofan devoted
more time to her presence on Instagram
and gained more than 19,000 followers
in the space of just a year. She’s also set
up YouTube and Etsy accounts, both of
which she hopes will help her to grow her
own successful business.
She never expected the support – let
alone a fan base. But it’s obvious she has
one, and it’s clear she’s still getting used to
it.
‘So many people witnessed my journey
becoming an artist,’ she says, smiling, pinkcheeked, humbled by the support.
