Greenstone

Used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck

used to have a lover, but I loved her, then she left,

I don’t think I’m broken hearted, I don’t think I’m bereft,

Used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck.

I used to have a way with words, it seemed so for a time

there was a pretty English girl who’d dance upon a rhyme

but there’s no more magic in a rhyme than in a crooked deck

used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck.

I used to have a memory of boats in Milford Sound

Pounamu parrot feathers and falling water on the ground,

I keep it locked away so that I know I won’t forget,

used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck.

I used to have a silver ring I wore on my right finger

still now I cannot take it off, guess that makes me a dead ringer

I think she gave it to me to keep my wolves in check;

used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck

and how it fell,

and it broke in two

and how we cried,

when we broke in two.

I kissed your mouth

when I lied to you

I am a liar, I know it’s true.

If I were braver - coulda saved you.

Used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck,

used to have a lover, but I loved her, then I left.

I don’t think I’m broken hearted, but darling, could you check?

Used to have some greenstone but it fell from off my neck.
