Editors' note
We drove down side roads and sandy coasts while our hair whipped in the breeze and
our hands surfed the wind outside. We swam with sharks and blew out candles in the
dark. We explored bodies and hearts; lost ourselves in a maze, came back home, felt the
urge to leave again.
We have always wanted to do a theme on moving, on restlessness. We can
pore over maps all day. They show us places like Sweet Lips, Tennessee and the red
lands we’ve never stepped on; lines stretching across the world that curve and rise like
rough waters.
‘Atlas’ gave us that and more – stories about people who’ve left and people
who are leaving, about escaping to the highlands and getting lost in the city. We
have stories about being disconnected, from the world, from yourself; poems about
discovering names and tongues and places, and photos from faraway continents.
Explore the stories in this issue like you would your favourite place. Look
up to the sky, turn left when you want to turn right. Pinpoint the spots you want to
come back to – chart the areas of the illustrations that you love and get lost in the
photographs and maps.
And if you leave, always come back again.
