THE STORY SO FAR
Sylvia P began in 1994, with a mission. Sylvia Pichler, mother-of-three,
facing a language barrier in a new country, had to create a stand-out leotard for
her 8-year-old gymnast daughter, Sandra – who is now our Creative Director.
After moving to Australia from Austria in 1992, Sylvia needed to find a new place
to buy leotards. Sylvia searched high and low in Brisbane, Australia. It was difficult
to purchase gymnastics or athletic wear that was both comfortable
and stylish at that time.
Persevering with very little luck, Sylvia finally decided to take matters into her own
hands. A self-taught seamstress novice, she purchased 50cms of fluorescent yellow
material from a local Brisbane fabric shop. Sylvia borrowed an overlocker and zigzag
sewing machine from a friend and started her own design and patternmaking
process. Finally, after some manipulation, the first Sylvia P leotard was born. This
authentic made leotard would definitely not be the last.
Of course, Sandra rapidly became the trendiest and most uniquely dressed gymnast
kid in class. The distinctive leotards captured the attention of gymnasts and
coaches. It didn’t take long for the local gymnastics community to start placing their
own custom orders that were Like No Other.
Fast-forward to today, Sylvia manages the production floor of our Brisbane-based
factory. Sylvia ensures the company continues to create the same distinctive,
quality-rich garments that are known for their individuality industry wide. Sylvia P
Teamwear has a global reach that respects the authentic personality of its clients,
treating each one Like No Other.
Sylvia P is a truly iconic, family-run affair. All three of Sylvia’s children,
Thomas, Daniela and Sandra, manage key departments within the business.
As former world-class gymnasts or coaches, her children understand the
pressures and needs of athletes when creating each design.
