The city bike is an institution of modern life for most urbandwellers . Improvements in cycling infrastructure , technology and a booming cycling culture are all contributing to more people riding than has been seen in decades . Besides that , it seems every tenth person is a Foodora courier , which has pushed custom bicycles into the mainstream culture in a way we ’ ve never seen before . The humble “ fixies ” and vintage road bikes donned proudly by couriers of generations past just don ’ t seem to cut it when your job description reads : “ Must be comfortable biking in weather conditions that ’ d make most people vomit ; demonstrated ability in irony an asset .” The mainstream push towards “ gravel ” and touring bikes , specifically designed for long-distance comfort in a myriad of terrain , further blurs the lines of the traditional variants such as mountain , road and city bikes .
