Remembering Shirley Patterson
By Pamelya Herndon, Executive Director
Shirley Patterson was a fierce advocate for women and a strong
supporter of the Southwest Women’s Law Center. Shirley and her
long-time companion Susan Cho attended the inaugural launch of Celebrating Women’s
Stories during my first year as Executive Director and never missed an event thereafter, until
Shirley was too sick to attend in March. On Saturday April 7, I spent part of the afternoon
with Shirley. We discussed her amazing gift and eye for photography, and my desire to learn
the photographic skills that she naturally possessed. I marveled over the remarkable
photographs that she had taken over the years. Before leaving for the day, we talked about
getting together for dinner later in the month. But, God had another plan. Shirley died on
Tuesday, April 10.
Shirley Patterson was passionate about elevating the lives of women and amplifying ways to
overcome the barriers they faced. Shirley volunteered time toward making sure the Law
Center was connected to the people who could help advance our work. She strongly believed in
the mission of the Southwest Women’s Law Center.
I am proud to have a signed copy of Turning Points in Women’s Lives written by Shirley
Patterson and Susan Cho. The book is an exceptional collection of stories complied by the
authors that provides a vivid image of the lives of women who were the powerful supporters of
their families, friends and neighbors. Not only do I have a copy of the book signed by Shirley
Patterson, but I had the distinct honor of writing a review that is printed on the outside cover
of the book.
Without a doubt, the world is a better place because Shirley Patterson was here. We will miss
her, but it is comforting to know that Shirley’s legacy will remain with us forever.
