Swing the Fly Issue 2.3 Winter 2014-15 | Page 42

Day 1-Sanctity

It all started off normal. Most of the time, steelheading is challenging. To start things off it was no different this time around. It was the right time of year with the right weather and conditions were as good as one could ask for. We launched on a Northwest river on this autumn day for a four-day and three-night camp trip in a wilderness section of a sweet little high desert river. The colors were blazing brilliant in this season with air and water temperatures mild. Our casts flew, flies swung, and it all seemed perfect. We even managed a few hooked fish and one to hand by nightfall on the opening day. At dinner that evening the group of guys had picked a word to share with each other. Around the table ideas and passions were shared. It was a perfect end to a great day of sacredness, blessedness, and purity.
