Triple Haul

In reality you can put a haul into any casting stroke that creates enough line speed to enable you to feed the slack line generated by the haul. Why stop at a double haul? With a cast like a double spey, snap t and even a snake roll you have three movements of the rod so put a haul in all three! I mostly “triple” haul a double spey and a snake roll when using a double taper and when casting long line lengths. The first haul is used to get the line out of the water from a distance. The second haul is used to create a powerful D-loop and of course, the last haul is used to get the forward cast zinging out.

As with all hauling you must have enough line speed for the feed in each step. I can’t stress that enough. Failure in this department will lead to slack and slack kills!

Only a few casts have enough rod strokes to make a triple haul. The double spey is one of them. Start the cast as you would with a normal double spey and with the line held in your line hand. As you make the first stroke (the Set up stroke) make a haul with the left hand. This will help get a long line out of the water and make it easier to land the line tip in the correct position. There must be enough line speed in the stroke to take out the slack in preparation for the second haul.
