“…by reaching out, by sharing,
and by teaching what values
generations before us stood for,
[we] are carrying out the thoughts
and aspirations of the founders.”
—Alan Chesney,
1986 Mount Auburn Cemetery Annual Report
The outreach efforts described by Alan Chesney when
announcing this new organization remain a significant
aspect of the Friends’ activities. With a 1995 grant from
the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Friends
began a multi-year and multi-pronged plan to improve
the Cemetery’s educational outreach. Funding from the
NEH and other sources has enabled the Friends to create
a rich and dynamic array of interpretive resources includ-
ing printed maps and guides, three audio tours, and, most
significantly, a Visitors Center located in Story Chapel.
Countless visitors have left the Cemetery with a much
greater appreciation for this special place since the creation
of these many amenities. See the “Did You Know?” section on
the following page for some other interesting facts about
the growth of the Friends’ educational outreach during the
past 25 years.
The Friends would like to thank everyone who has
contributed to our success over these many years. We will
continue to faithfully carry out our mission in order to
sustain and enhance this inspirational place for future
generations.
