People and Happenings
Maurene Simonelli, Greenhouse Manager,
Started on 7/9/84
Maurene Simonelli, Greenhouse Manager, started at Mount Auburn
Cemetery in July 1984 working in the Greenhouse. Mount Auburn’s
“Plant Goddess” imbued the Greenhouse and entire Cemetery
with an enduring spirit of compassion and generosity. She brought
warmth and smiles to staff and visitors alike. Whether they were just
there enjoying the beautiful blooms, attending the annual wreath-
making workshop, or purchasing flowers for a loved one’s grave,
she made the Greenhouse welcoming to everyone who walked
through the door. She was generous with her time and knowledge
about lotions and potions, herbs, and bow- and wreath-making,
earning her the great affection of visitors, volunteers, and staff alike.
Maurene always offered a big smile that warmed your heart. And by
the way, she sure knew how to grow high-quality plants!
Bill Seaward, Fleet Mechanic,
Started on 10/1/86
Bill Seaward started at Mount Auburn Cemetery in October 1986 as a mechanic. Bill
had a penchant for finding old things that spoke to him and occasionally had value
beyond just the stories they told. He had a particular appreciation of old cameras
and New England artwork, including long-neglected paintings on canvases which he
patiently restored in his spare time. He practiced the zen of blade sharpening at work
(and at home), which is the only way to practice blade sharpening! Bill was a citizen of
the “place that time forgot,” a phrase he used for his hometown of Westport, MA.
