Williamina Fleming:

Astronomer

By Thom Burns Curator of the Astronomical Plate Collection, Harvard College Observatory
The word‘ Astronomer’ on the gravestone of Williamina Paton Stevens Fleming carries deep meaning. Throughout her life, she was called many things: woman, immigrant, single mother, housekeeper, divorcee, secretary, editor, curator, coworker, and“ computer”( mathematical calculator). Despite all she accomplished, Harvard University never officially called her an astronomer. Her monument at Mount Auburn Cemetery honors a life marked by hard work, determination, and important contributions to astronomy.
While her name is less recognized today, Williamina Fleming changed how we view and understand the universe. The determination and professionalism she evinced at Harvard helped open doors for women in science. Thus, her monument stands for more than a single title, reflecting the broader impact of her legacy.
